Translation:
If, Ο Lord, You think me able to behold it, then, Ο Master of yogis, reveal to me Your immutable Self.
Commentary:
What we know here is the humility of Arjuna in appealing to the Lord to show His Cosmic Form, if it is possible for him to see it. Is he fit for it? Is he fit for seeing the vision? He did not demand it as a right, in the manner of a person who claims it as a reward of his devotion. Such humility is needed for every disciple in the presence of the Guru. He should leave it to the teacher to give him any experience which he thinks fit for the disciple. The disciple does not know what he is, what his powers are, and what he is fit for. The teacher knows it. So Arjuna appeals to the Lord to show him the Cosmic Form if the Lord thinks that he is fit to see it. Moreover, in the previous verse, Arjuna has declared his complete faith in the words of the Lord. He believes every word of the Lord when He described His infinite Glory. So faith and humility are the only means to win the Lord’s Grace.

SRI RAMANA MAHARSHI ON INITIATION
Sometimes we are unaware whether we are worthy of receiving a spiritual experience. We go to great Masters and demand the highest spiritual experience. Once, a youngster who visited Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi asked the sage arrogantly, “I have read the literature on Sri Ramakrishna. There it speaks about how Ramakrishna gave God-realisation to Vivekananda with a mere touch. Can you perform such a feat on me?”
The devotees around were aghast at the audacity of this person. They waited for the answer from the mighty sage. Maharshi remained silent for a few minutes, as usual. Then, looking at the youngster, he asked, “Is the questioner Vivekananda?” That was sufficient to silence the young man. This is the state of many who approach a Master. They may not be worthy candidates, but they want to test the Master.
To have the vision of one’s own Inner Being, a Master is necessary. The Master pushes the mind inward by his very presence, and from within the heart, the same power reveals the Self.
The proper way of asking for it is shown by Arjuna, who says, “O Lord, I do not know if I am worthy enough to have that kind of vision. If I am worthy and can bear it, please bestow that experience on me. If I am not worthy, make me worthy by Thy Grace.” (Source: Srimad Bhagavad Gita – Elixir of Eternal Wisdom | Vol 1)
