WORLDLY ATTRACTIONS VS TRANSCENDENTAL EXPERIENCE
A lesson about this was imparted to a spiritual aspirant who was a follower of the Ramakrishna order. He went to see a theatrical drama one day. Later, when he recounted this to Swami Brahmananda, the direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, the saint told him, “Child, if you want to enjoy visions, you need not go to see such performances. Instead, intensely engage in japa and meditation; then you can have more dazzling visions and delight in the transcendental plane of meditation. When one sees the magnificence of the Lord, all interest in seeing the worldly magnificence disappears.” (Source: Srimad Bhagavad Gita – Elixir of Eternal Wisdom | Vol 1)
SWAMI RAMATIRTHA ON GOD
What is the Lord? He is sarvāścaryamaya—the cosmic mystery. When Swami Ramatirtha was in America, someone asked whether the Hindu God was a Mister or a Miss or a Mrs Swami laughed and said, “He is a mystery.” He is the source of all mysteries and wonders—everything that is mysterious and wonderful in the world. “sarvāścaryamayo hariḥ—the beloved Lord is the source of all wonders,” says the Bhagavata. He is anantam—infinite, viśvatomukham—with faces on all sides. Wherever you look, learn to behold Him. Learn to behold Him in every face; learn to see Him in every flower and in every creature.
