मा ते व्यथा मा च विमूढभावो
दृष्ट्वा रूपं घोरमीदृङ्ममेदम् |
व्यपेतभी: प्रीतमना: पुनस्त्वं
तदेव मे रूपमिदं प्रपश्य || 49||
mā te vyathā mā cha vimūḍha-bhāvo
dṛiṣhṭvā rūpaṁ ghoram īdṛiṅ mamedam
vyapeta-bhīḥ prīta-manāḥ punas tvaṁ
tad eva me rūpam idaṁ prapaśhya
mā te—you should not be; vyathā—afraid; mā—not; cha—and; vimūḍha-bhāvaḥ—bewildered state; dṛiṣhṭvā—on seeing; rūpam—form; ghoram—terrible; īdṛik—such; mama—of mine; idam—this; vyapeta-bhīḥ—free from fear; prīta-manāḥ—cheerful mind; punaḥ—again; tvam—you; tat eva—that very; me—my; rūpam—form; idam—this; prapaśhya—behold
Translation:
Be not afraid, be not bewildered, on seeing this terrific form of Mine. Free from fear and glad at heart, behold again My other form.
Commentary:
LORD NARASIMHA’S APPEARANCE
This happened at a Bhagavata saptāha that was being held in a village. Some youngsters got together and devised a novel plan to enact the Narasimha avatāra on the day that portion was to be read. Thus, when the satsaṅga was underway, and the verses from the Bhagavata describing the advent of Lord Narasimha were being chanted, suddenly, there was a thundering roar and a person dressed as Narasimha appeared there. He looked exactly like Narasimha. It was indeed a frightening sight, with a fire lit up all around him. Many in the audience who were unprepared for such a sight were terrified. Some children started crying in fear. Some others stood up reverentially and did prostrations. It was the most frightful scene!
After a few minutes of this uproar, Narasimha sat down on a chair, calm and composed. At once, his nephew, a young boy, ran to him and sat on his lap happily. The boy had no fear as he had already seen his uncle dressing up as Narasimha. He was, therefore, least scared by the fierce form. He sat in Narasimha’s lap like Prahlada did.
This is the secret. When you know for certain that behind all the storms of destiny that happen in your life, the Lord is present—it is His face that appears as forbidding sometimes and beautiful at other times; it is all He alone—then, that very moment, you have woken up from the dream of saṃsāra. vyapetabhīḥ—there is no more fear. prītamanāḥ—the mind becomes pleasant, blissful.
