After a short visit to Camp Percy, Swamiji went to Thousand Island Park on the Saint Lawrence River in New York State. Miss Elizabeth Dutcher, a Vedanta student, gave her cottage to Swamiji so that he could rest there as well as give classes for sincere students. Swamiji stayed there nearly seven weeks and taught his American students the uplifting philosophy of Vedanta along with the lives and teachings of other great teachers of the world; these teachings were later published as Inspired Talks. In Thousand Island Park Swamiji initiated some of his male and female students into sannyasa and brahmacharya, reminding them again and again: “Find God. Nothing else matters.” He emphasized morality as the basis of spiritual life. Without truth, nonviolence, continence, noncovetousness, cleanliness, and austerity, he repeated, there could be no spirituality. (Source: God Lived with Them)
