Latu was always eager to serve his guru. One day he learned that the Master had expressed a wish to have a picture of Sri Chaitanya for his room, and the next day he went to Ramchandra in Calcutta to obtain one. When the Master saw the new picture in his room, he asked: “Did Ram mind your asking for this picture? Did you ask for it in my name?” “No,” replied Latu, “I didn’t mention your name. I simply asked him for a picture of Chaitanya.” “Oh, indeed!” said the Master. “And what was his reply?” “He advised me to go to mother [Ramchandra’s wife] and ask for one.” “Good,” said the Master. “You should never ask for anything in my name.” (According to the scriptures, it is not good for yogis to accept gifts. This frees the yogi from being influenced by the giver and also from any obligation to him.)
