Mathur and his family were carried along on a current of bliss during the five days of the festival. As it was about to conclude, the priest sent a messenger to Mathur Babu, requesting him to say his final prayer to the Mother before the immersion ceremony. This came as a shock to Mathur. It was unbearable for him to think of disrupting that joyful festival, and he cried out: “I won’t allow anyone to immerse the image of the Mother. Let Her worship be continued as it is. If anyone immerses the image against my will, it will lead to a terrible disaster — even bloodshed.”
Since everyone else was afraid to say anything more to Mathur, Jagadamba asked the Master to save the situation. Sri Ramakrishna went to Mathur’s room and found him pacing back and forth with a grim face and red, tearful eyes. Seeing the Master, Mathur said: “Father, whatever others may say, I won’t allow the Mother to be immersed in the Ganges. I have ordered the worship to be continued daily. How shall I survive in this world without the Mother?” Sri Ramakrishna stroked Mathur’s chest and said: “Oh, is this what makes you afraid? Who has told you that you will have to live without the Mother? And where would She go even if you consign Her image to the Ganges? Can the Mother stay away from Her son? For the last three days She has accepted your worship in the puja hall, but from today She will accept your worship, sitting constantly in your heart.” The Master’s magic touch transformed Mathur’s mind and convinced him that his fears were meaningless. He became happy again, and the immersion ceremony was performed. (Source: They Lived with God)
