In time Yogananda’s health began to fail. Swamiji took him to Darjeeling and Almora, health resorts in the Himalayan region, and arranged all kinds of treatment for him. In spite of all that, Yogananda’s body rapidly deteriorated. It became difficult for him to serve Holy Mother, so he made Brahmachari Krishnalal (later Swami Dhirananda) his assistant. Swamiji noticed that many women devotees would visit Holy Mother. It was not proper for a young brahmacharin to be around women — although Swamiji had no objection to his serving Holy Mother. Observing the situation, Swamiji asked Yogananda: “As you know, various kinds of women come to Holy Mother. Who will be responsible if this brahmacharin’s mind wanders from the spiritual path?” Touching his chest, Yogananda immediately replied: “I will be responsible. I am ready to sacrifice my life for him.” It is needless to speak about that Unseen Power that uttered these words through Yogananda’s lips as “I.”
