Nistarini felt very free with the Master, a rare trait in spiritual life. This feeling of freedom originates from simplicity, purity, love, and unselfishness. God loves to play with free souls because they do not bother Him with worldly desires. Sri Ramakrishna said of Nistarini: “She is a great soul. She is a partial incarnation of one of the ten forms of the Divine Mother.” On another occasion the Master said, “Through the influence of his wife, Navagopal escaped from maya.”
The Master was very fond of Nistarini and allowed her to touch his feet. Later she related some incidents that occurred during her association with the Master: “When I would come, he would send all the gentlemen out of the room and talk to me alone. Once he asked me why I came; what I found in him to draw me so often to Dakshineswar. I replied: ‘It is hard to explain. That which made Prahlada forget his father, Dhruva and others forget their parents, that I find here.’
“A friend had told me I should chant Haribol [repeat the name of the Lord] and I did so. But it caused great perplexity in my mind. ‘Here I am calling upon Hari,’ I said to myself, ‘and yet I am told that one should seek salvation through the guru alone.’ I went to Dakshineswar to see Sri Ramakrishna but before I could explain my trouble, he said to me, ‘Guru and Hari are one.’” (Source: They Lived with God)
When Girish raised the question of the guru and the Ishta [the Chosen Deity], the Master said, “He who is the Ishta appears in the form of the guru.” And again, “The guru disappears into the form of the Ishta.” (Source: They Lived with God)
