During her lifetime Rasmani had made Mathur the custodian of the Dakshineswar temple, and after her death he became the sole executor of her vast estate. Naturally this placed on him a great deal of responsibility, which he took very seriously. One day a thief stole the ornaments from the image of Krishna. When Mathur found out about it he went to the temple and said to the deity: “What a shame, O God! You couldn’t save Your own ornaments!” Sri Ramakrishna, who was also there, sharply rebuked him, saying: “The idea! Does He who has Lakshmi [the goddess of fortune] for His handmaid and attendant ever lack any splendour? Those jewels may be precious to you, but to God they are no better than lumps of clay. Shame on you! You shouldn’t have spoken so meanly. What riches can you give to God to magnify His glory?” (Source: They Lived with God)
Shambhu thought that the main purpose of human life was to offer everything one had to God and to help the poor. One day he said to Sri Ramakrishna, “Please bless me, that I may die leaving my riches at the Lotus Feet of God.” The Master replied: “These are riches only to you. What riches can you offer God? To Him these are mere dust and straw.” (Source: They Lived with God)
