Through trials and tribulations God tests the faith of his devotees. Once Manomohan’s eldest daughter, Manikprabha, was seriously ill, so he decided not to go to Dakshineswar as usual. His mother asked him, “Will you not go to visit the Master today?” “How can I go, Mother?” Manomohan replied. “You are going to the Master,” said Shyama Sundari, “whose name removes all evil. I can assure you that while you are visiting him no disaster will happen here. Please go to him right now. Who can stop death? This is the time for you to show your faith. He who remains unperturbed, surrendering everything to God, is a man of faith. Please don’t misuse the time. Go to the Master.”
When Manomohan’s wife noticed that he was getting ready to leave for Dakshineswar, she became very upset and scolded him, saying, “Our daughter is dying and you are going off to Dakshineswar!” But Manomohan was not deterred since he had tremendous respect for his mother’s words. As he was about to leave, his mother said to him, “Please inform the Master of your daughter’s illness and bring a little dust from that place where the Master meditates.”
“How can I talk about my daughter’s illness to the Master?”
“What are you so afraid of? You are a child of God. You are supposed to tell him of your sufferings so that he can remove them.”
“How can I discuss these mundane things with the Master?”
“You won’t have to tell him verbally. Go to him and mentally inform him. He is all-knowing. He will understand your pain and then everything will happen according to his will.”
When he arrived at Dakshineswar, Manomohon bowed down to the Master and seated himself among the devotees. In the course of conversation the Master said, “Today while a man was getting ready to come here, his wife angrily said some harsh words to him.” That day Sri Ramakrishna talked for some time about renunciation. This helped to take Manomohan’s mind off the thought of his sick daughter and give him strength. He had felt that his daughter would not live, but by the grace of the Master she recovered.
